Art shortlisted for the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition 2017

I am so thrilled that Éclair and Pavlova have been shortlisted for the RA Summer Exhibition 2017. I wont find out until May if they have made it through to the exhibition, so fingers crossed!

I wanted to create and submit two paintings that looked so real that they could be eaten from the canvas! Éclairs are nostalgic for me too and I wanted to pour an emotional dimension into this picture and convey the beauty of something I fondly remember having as a child. I have achieved a sense of realness through the use of acrylic paint, which enabled me to create the crisp, golden brown texture of the choux pastry. And I used gloss to convey the glistening chocolate sheen on top of the éclair.

With Pavlova I wanted to create a photo-real, edible piece of art that explores the idea of cropping in photography. I have therefore only captured half of the subject on canvas. I used acrylic paint with thickener to convey the texture of meringue with some pink and grey paintbrush strokes to create depth in the peaks. I have put a lot of fine detail into the berries on top of the Pavlova, really showcasing the beauty of the strawberries, raspberries and blueberries.

I thought they worked well as a pair as they employ a similar palette with the strength of grey and are both from the pudding world!
