Lemon Meringue Pie

After painting a lot of fruit and vegetables over the last few months, I wanted to wet my appetite for sweet things once again and develop the pudding series I started back in January with Pavlova, Profiteroles and Black Forest Gateau. I wanted to paint a pudding that had really strong shapes and colours, which could be expressed in minimal brushstrokes with the textured elements that I love.

I stumbled across the abstract artist, Howard Hodgkin, and fell in love with his fruit crumble painting above. What I loved about this painting was how he denoted a raspberry to a paintbrush mark and the crumble to a single delicious yellow brush stroke. Then it hit me that a lemon meringue pie with it’s nice layers of white and yellow with a swirling meringue top would be ideal to get a bit more expressive with the brushstrokes.

And so the birth of my latest creation ‘Lemon Meringue Pie’. My next thing in the pudding oeuvre is likely to be a pineapple upside down cake, which has such an amazing pattern and glisten.
